Nicaragua 2009 Journal

Well I'm sitting on the plane going from Atlanta to Newark so it's basically pointless for me to be typing this but i'm sure many of you want to know what we actually did on our last day. Yes, we actually did a lot of interesting things worth mentioning. When we woke up we took care of a few last
minute packing details. Then around eight we went over to Kathy's Waffle House. It's a little breakfast place on a corner right across the street from a beautiful colonial style church. Well we think it's a church. Apparently it's a nunnery. It was a great last breakfast for the trip. Many of us had enough to eat that we appreciated all the walking to help us walk off our food babies. Afterward we got packed up and loaded up on the bus to go to a volcano outlook. On our way Alex ended up throwing up her food baby. The girl really knows how to put on a show even when ill.

So I had typed up the whole entry for the day and then I managed to lose it. The worst thing about it is I knew it was going to happen but I did nothing to stop it. I guess I got what I deserved for failing to hedge myself from this catastrophe.

Anywhoo, I gave Keghan the day off today because he was busy saying goodbye to all our friends at TF and I didn’t want him to have to stop.

I finally let Keghan get up for the computer so he can interact with the group.  I figured it was about time to let him spread his wings.

So where do I begin with what happened on Day 9?  I guess I'll begin at the beginning with the rest of the group including Keghan got up at 4 am to go pick squash.  This was the day when if you hadn't gone yet, you went.  So the group was off.  Led by their fearless leader Jo-Lynne into the dark they rode.

Ahh, what a day. We were able to sleep in a bit today which was very nice. Most of us then had the opportunity to go to the city dump. It was really a humbling and eye opening experience. We got to ride Nica style all the way to the dump in the back of a pick up truck with more people than can actually fit in it. I didn’t feel bad for the people whose bottoms hurt on the plywood seats from riding the bikes until I experienced it today. (I’m writing on day nine.) The dump was really a true experience. Some people actually work there for the city while others work there so they can pick through the trash to bring home items for their families.

Today was really a great day. This morning it was Tiehl, Katie, Alissa and Betty’s turn to get up at 4am and go squash picking. All went well for them until Tiehl had a mishap on her bike and managed to completely rip her pants. She took it with a classic McRobert’s attitude. Us guys went to a meeting for Nica men dealing with drugs and alcohol and or gangs. It was a great service, which talked to them about not caring what others think and filling an empty void with God.
